Parallel is a word that refers to two things that are the same or similar. One example of this is the highway that runs parallel to the river. Another example is the similarities between 50s blues and today's rap music. Parallel can also be used to describe a process, such as the transfer of electronic data several bits at a time.
The simplest definition of parallel is that it is the same distance apart as any other straight line in the same plane. However, it is important to remember that parallel lines never intersect with each other. Similarly, they cannot be perpendicular to each other (or intersect at any point). The word parallel is sometimes confused with the idea of equidistant which means that two things are the same distance from a common point.
What Are Examples of Parallel Lines?
Real-life examples of parallel lines include railway tracks, the edges of sidewalks and the opposite sides of a rectangle. In math, parallel lines are represented by the symbol displaystyle ||. Two lines are parallel to each other if they have the same slope. The slope of a line is determined by its equation, y = mx + b, where'm' represents the x-value and 'b' represents the y-intercept.
When lines are parallel, the alternate interior angles are equal and supplementary. This is shown in the diagram below. If you have the line a and the line c intersect each other, they are not parallel because their corresponding angles are not equal or supplementary.
